Socialization May Be Key To New Treatment For Anorexia Nervosa

Understanding how individuals with anorexia nervosa interact with others may lead to entirely new approaches to treating the disease which affects up to 10 million adolescents.Current treatments focus primarily on managing symptoms like starvation and low body weight. Although that's important, it is not always enough to result in lasting health, says Nancy Zucker, Ph.D, Director of Duke University Medical Center's Eating Disorders Program. In a comprehensive review of data published in the November issue of Psychological Bulletin, Zucker pinpoints many patterns of social dysfunction among individuals with anorexia nervosa. She and her colleagues at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill believe treatment focusing on these areas may help patients engage better with their family, friends, and health care providers.

New Guidelines Proposed for Preschoolers on Antidepressants

With the number of preschool-age children being prescribed stimulants, antidepressants and other psychiatric drugs on the rise, a group of researchers has suggested a standardized approach to treatment.

Child mental health professionals from Bradley Hasbro Children's Research Center in Rhode Island and 11 other institutions have developed recommendations for specific disorders to help clinicians who are considering medications for children ages 3 to 6.

The guidelines are published in the December issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

"These guidelines emphasize the importance of a family-focused assessment by clinicians with experience working with young children, the use of psychotherapy as the first line treatment for young children with severe psychiatric disorders, and the value of careful monitoring of symptoms and side effects when treating young children," said lead author Dr.

Years-Long Search Unlocks Deadly Genetic Disease

SMA is a neurodegenerative disorder occurring in children that involves severely weakened muscles and usually results in death within two years, often because muscles of the respiratory system can no longer support breathing. The X-linked form of the disease is passed unsuspectingly by healthy mothers to their sons.

SMA made sense to Messer and her family, but they were baffled by the autosomal part of the diagnosis.

"I'm not a genetics person, but I know that autosomal recessive means that both mothers and fathers have to be carriers [of the gene that causes the disease]," Messer said. "We started scratching our heads. What are the odds that all of us would have married somebody with the same recessive gene and our two mothers and our grandmother? I don't calculate odds very well, but I can tell that that's just a staggering amount."

At about this time, another cousin, Patti, living in Houston, married and wanted to have children but was terrified after watching the devastation of her family.

Miranda almost died from anorexia. She is eight years old

Miranda turned eight years old last week. For her birthday, her parents took her to a pizza parlour, where she ate pasta and ice-cream. For any other child, it would have been a common enough treat. But for Miranda, the trip was nothing short of momentous.

Three-and-a-half months ago, seven-year-old Miranda was almost 23 pounds lighter than she should have been, with a body mass index (BMI) of just 12.5. A BMI of under 18.5 is officially considered to be underweight but, despite being considerably below that, Miranda continued not only to refuse to eat but also to drink.

Distraught and desperate, Miranda's parents, Simon and Joanna, sent her to Rhodes Farm in north London, Britain's first and largest residential clinic for child anorexics. They were told she was suffering from food avoidance emotional disorder and would have to stay in the clinic for five months.

Ambien CR(R) (zolpidem Tartrate Extended-release) Tablets CIV Improved ...

This study was a multi-center, double-blind, parallel-group, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in 381 adults ages 21 to 64 with co-morbid chronic insomnia and GAD. The study evaluated the overall improvement of insomnia, as measured by total sleep time in patients treated with Ambien CR and the antidepressant escitalopram (Lexapro(R)) compared to treatment with placebo and escitalopram. Patients received Ambien CR 12.5 mg (n=191) or placebo (n=190) each night followed by 10 mg of escitalopram each day during the 8-week study, followed by a one-week period of escitalopram only. Treatment was well tolerated during the study and adverse events were similar between treatment groups.

"The anxiety experienced by patients with GAD can often lead to sleep problems such as difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep," says Thomas Roth, PhD, director of the Sleep Disorders and Research Center at Henry Ford Hospital.

The Shrink's Progress

ORINDA, Calif. -- Debbie, a 17-year-old now down to 86 pounds and ever closer to her secret goal of 81 pounds, slowly awoke in her bed on a hospital intensive care unit. She was so groggy from her drug overdose that the only thing she noticed was the painful burning sensation in her nose.

She then discovered that she couldn't move her hands to rub the unpleasant sensation away. Debbie had survived her suicide attempt and finally figured out that padded leather restraints secured her wrists and ankles to the sides of the bed. The burning sensation came from a tube that had been inserted through her nose down into her stomach.

The tube had been used initially to pump out whatever pill fragments in Debbie's stomach had not been absorbed before she reached the hospital. After monitoring her for awhile the medical doctor decided that because her nutritional condition was so precarious, the nasogastric tube would be used for feeding Debbie's malnourished body.
